Starting Over at 44: The Life I Never Planned Became the One I needed
If you had asked me a year ago where I thought my life would be today, I would have described something completely different.
I had a plan.
I had security.
I believed I knew what my future looked like and who would be standing beside me as I built it.
Life had other plans.
At 44 years old, I found myself starting over.
Not because I wanted a fresh start, but because the life I had built suddenly no longer existed.
For a long time, I believed that if I worked hard enough, loved enough, and gave enough of myself, everything would eventually work out. I poured my heart into my job, into the people I loved, and into building a future I believed would always be there.
Then, almost overnight, everything changed.
The hardest part wasn’t losing what I had worked for.
It was realizing that some of the people I expected to walk beside me couldn’t walk this part of the journey with me.
That kind of heartbreak is difficult to explain.
When the people you love the most can’t give you the support you desperately need, it makes you question everything. Your worth. Your decisions. Your future. Even yourself.
There are still days when I wonder if I’ll ever feel completely like myself again.
There are still nights when sleep doesn’t come because my mind keeps asking, “What now?”
And yet, somewhere in the middle of all that uncertainty, something unexpected happened.
People I barely knew began showing up.
A kind message.
A phone call.
A client who believed in me.
A colleague who encouraged me.
A friend who reminded me that I was stronger than I felt.
They probably have no idea how much those small moments mattered.
They became proof that kindness often comes from the places we least expect.
Sometimes what feels like everything falling apart is actually making room for something healthier.
For years, I lived surrounded by stress, pressure, and relationships that left me constantly trying to earn approval or keep the peace. I didn’t fully recognize how much that environment had shaped me until I stepped away from it.
Freedom doesn’t always arrive with celebration.
Sometimes it arrives wrapped in grief.
Sometimes freedom looks like sitting alone in your living room wondering how you’re going to rebuild your life.
Sometimes it feels like losing everything before realizing you’ve finally made room for peace.
Today, I’m still rebuilding.
I’m building a new business from the ground up.
I’m helping families create unforgettable vacations.
Most importantly, I’m rebuilding myself.
Do I have hard days?
Absolutely.
Healing isn’t a straight line.
Some mornings I feel the weight of everything I’ve lost.
Some days fear is louder than hope.
Some days I wonder if I’m making the right decisions.
Starting over is exciting, but if I’m being completely honest, it’s also terrifying.
I’m learning to hold both emotions at the same time.
To be afraid…
and hopeful.
To grieve what I’ve lost…
while believing something beautiful can still be ahead.
I don’t know exactly what my future looks like yet.
I’m still writing that chapter.
But little by little, fear isn’t making all of my decisions anymore.
Hope is beginning to have a voice too.
If you’re reading this because you’re starting over too, whether you’re 34, 44, or 64, I want you to know something.
Your story isn’t over.
The chapter you’re in right now may be painful, but it doesn’t have to be the ending.
The people who walk away don’t get to decide your future.
The doors that close don’t define your worth.
You are allowed to rebuild.
You are allowed to change.
You are allowed to create a life that looks nothing like the one you imagined.
Maybe it won’t happen overnight.
Maybe it won’t even happen this year.
But healing has a way of showing up quietly, one small step at a time.
As for me…
I don’t know exactly where this road is taking me.
I still have moments of fear.
I still have questions.
I still have days when I miss the life I thought I was going to have.
But for the first time in a long time, I’m also curious.
Curious about the woman I’m becoming.
Curious about the life I’m building.
Curious about the people I’ll meet along the way.
And maybe that’s what hope really is.
Not having all the answers…
but believing that something good might still be waiting around the corner.
Starting over at 44 doesn’t feel like the end anymore.
It feels like the beginning of a story I’m still learning to write.
