Zoo Miami: A Complete Guide for Families Visiting with Kids
When most people think about Miami, they picture beautiful beaches, shopping, nightlife, and amazing restaurants. While all of those are worth experiencing, Miami has so much more to offer—especially for families.
If you’re visiting with children (or you’re a local looking for a fun weekend activity), one place that deserves a spot on your itinerary is Zoo Miami.
Believe it or not, I’ve lived in Miami for more than 20 years, and until recently, I had never visited the zoo.
I know… shocking!
The truth is, I wasn’t sure how the animals were cared for, and animal welfare has always been important to me. I never wanted to support a place where animals weren’t treated well.
That changed during one of my trips to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
I was talking with one of the animal keepers about the enrichment activities they provide for the animals. She explained that zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) must meet strict standards for animal care, veterinary medicine, conservation, education, and habitat quality. She also mentioned that Zoo Miami is AZA accredited.
That conversation completely changed my perspective, and I decided it was finally time to visit.
Our First Visit
From the moment we walked in, I was pleasantly surprised.
The zoo is beautiful, clean, and incredibly spacious. The animal habitats are designed to resemble their natural environments, giving the animals plenty of room to roam, swim, climb, and simply be animals. It never felt like they were confined to small enclosures, which was something I had been concerned about.
Even though the weather wasn’t ideal and it rained on and off throughout the day, we still had an amazing time. In fact, the cooler temperatures seemed to make many of the animals more active.
My son absolutely loved seeing giraffes, elephants, rhinos, lions, tigers, monkeys, flamingos, zebras, and so many other animals from around the world. It turned into one of those family days that we’ll both remember for a long time.
Rent the Safari Cycle—You’ll Thank Me Later
If I could give you only one piece of advice, it would be this:
Rent one of the Safari Cycles.
Zoo Miami is one of the largest zoos in the United States, covering more than 700 acres. While not all of it is accessible to guests, you’ll still do a lot of walking.
We rented the large four-person bike, and it completely transformed our experience. Instead of hearing, “Mom, my feet hurt,” halfway through the visit, we comfortably explored almost the entire zoo while having fun together.
It honestly became one of our favorite parts of the day.
If you’re visiting with younger children, I think it’s absolutely worth the extra cost.
Ticket Prices
At the time of writing, general admission is:
- Adults (13+): $25.95
- Children (3–12): $21.95
- Children 2 and under: Free
- Parking: Free
Safari Cycle rentals currently start around:
- Small Safari Cycle: $54 for up to 3 hours
- Large Safari Cycle: $69 for up to 3 hours

Food & Drinks
One thing I appreciated was that there are plenty of places throughout the zoo to grab lunch, snacks, ice cream, and cold drinks. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a place to sit down for lunch, you won’t have trouble finding something.
However, this is Miami, and the Florida heat can be intense for much of the year.
My biggest recommendation is to bring a reusable water bottle. Zoo Miami has water refill stations located throughout the park, so you can easily refill your bottle during the day instead of constantly buying bottled water. It’s better for your wallet, better for the environment, and helps everyone stay hydrated.
Plan for the Miami Weather
South Florida weather can change quickly, so it’s worth planning ahead.
I recommend bringing:
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- A hat
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Lightweight clothing
- A reusable water bottle
- A small poncho or rain jacket during the summer months
Even on cloudy days, the Florida sun is strong, so staying hydrated and taking breaks will make your visit much more enjoyable.
Tips for Visiting Zoo Miami with Kids
Here are a few things I learned that I’d recommend:
- Arrive when the zoo opens to enjoy cooler temperatures and more active animals.
- Rent a Safari Cycle if you’re visiting with kids.
- Download the zoo map before you arrive.
- Plan to spend at least 4–6 hours exploring.
- Wear comfortable shoes—you’ll still walk quite a bit even with the bike.
- Take advantage of the shaded areas and indoor exhibits during the hottest part of the day.
- Bring a camera—you’ll want lots of pictures!
Is Zoo Miami Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
As someone who waited over 20 years to visit, I honestly wish I had gone sooner.
Zoo Miami exceeded every expectation I had. The zoo is clean, well-maintained, educational, and clearly committed to animal care and conservation. It offers a full day of entertainment while giving children the opportunity to learn about wildlife from around the world.
Whether you’re visiting Miami on vacation or you’re a local looking for something different to do with your family, Zoo Miami is an experience I would happily recommend.
It turned out to be one of my favorite family outings, and I know we’ll be going back.
